The Story
Near Kate's Point on the Mahabaleshwar ridge, the great basalt cliffs of the Deccan Traps have been carved by wind and rain into the silhouette of an elephant's face — trunk, forehead, and all. The local name says it plainly: Elephant Point.
The 'needle hole' itself is a narrow vertical slit in the rock through which you glimpse the valleys and jungles far below. The point is one of three together — Kate's Point, Echo Point, and Needle Hole Point — that form one of the region's great wonder-trios.
The best time to arrive is just after the monsoon, when the Sahyadris are their greenest and the views stretch over misty gorges. It is a short drive from Mahabaleshwar town, itself famous for strawberries, lakes, and endless viewpoints.
