The Story
The ice lingam is a natural stalagmite: water drops trickle from the roof of the cave and freeze on the floor, slowly rising into a column that waxes and wanes with the moon. No hand carves it — winter grows it, and the cycle has repeated for as long as anyone remembers.
Legend tells that this is the very cave where Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality — the amar katha — to his consort Parvati. A pair of doves is said to have overheard it and become immortal, and pilgrims say a pair of doves still nests in the cave.
The annual Amarnath Yatra is one of the great pilgrimages of the world: a trek of over 100 kilometres through the Himalaya, past the lakes and passes of Kashmir, undertaken by hundreds of thousands of devotees in the short summer window when the cave is open.
