The Story
The Aleya lights appear as soft, wavering glows above the marshes — floating, flickering, and moving in ways that seem to follow the fishermen who brave the dark waters. Many believe they are the souls of anglers who perished in the treacherous creeks, guiding — or misleading — the living.
Old mariners would follow the lights at night, believing they led to land or to good fishing grounds. Some followed them into danger. These tales of ghostly lamps have been passed down through generations of Sundarbans fishing families, and they colour the whole delta with mystery.
Scientists offer a natural explanation: marsh gases — methane and phosphine from decomposing vegetation — ignite on contact with air, producing brief, dancing flames that hover over the wet ground. But in the dark, in the mangroves, with the tide whispering, the science never quite wins the argument.
