The Story
Born in 1848 in Rajahmundry, Viresalingam was a scholar of Telugu and Sanskrit who devoted his life to the reform of his society. He attacked the evils of child marriage and the terrible condition of widows, and he championed the cause of widow remarriage with a courage that defied the orthodoxy of his age.
He was also the creator of the modern Telugu language and literature: he wrote the first Telugu novels, the first autobiography, and countless essays and works that shaped modern Telugu prose. He founded schools and journals, and his home became the centre of the Andhra renaissance.
He died in 1919, honoured as the father of the Andhra renaissance. His reforms and his writings transformed the Telugu land, and his name remains the greatest in the modern history of the language and society of Andhra.
