The Story
Born in 1852 in Mangaluru, Subba Rao Pai was a lawyer who, in 1906, founded the Canara Hindu Permanent Fund — the institution that grew into the Canara Bank, one of the great banks of the nation. His vision was a bank of the people, rooted in the coastal land, that would serve their needs and their future.
His generosity was extraordinary: he gave lakhs for education, founding schools and colleges, and his philanthropy transformed the opportunities of the young people of the coast. He was also a supporter of the national movement and of the cause of the people.
He died in 1909, at just fifty-seven. His bank grew into a national institution, and his gifts to education continue to serve the land. He is honoured as one of the greatest sons of the Karnataka coast.
