The Story
Born in 1898, T.M.A. Pai was a physician who practised medicine with distinction before his greater mission found him. In 1953 he founded the first private medical college of Bhārat at Manipal, on the coast of Karnataka — and from that beginning he built a university city that became one of the great centres of education of the world.
His vision was education for all: the Manipal institutions — the Kasturba Medical College, the engineering college, the university, and the hospitals — grew into a vast complex that has educated students from more than fifty countries. He believed that education was the foundation of the nation's future, and he gave his life to it.
He died in 1979, honoured as one of the great builders of modern Bhārat. His Manipal has become the education capital of the coast, and his name is remembered with gratitude by the hundreds of thousands who studied in the institutions he founded.
