The Story
Born in 1899 in Palgad, Pandurang Sadashiv Sane — Sane Guruji — was a teacher whose love for his students knew no bounds. He joined the freedom movement under Gandhi's leadership and devoted his life to the service of the nation, teaching, writing, and working among the poor.
His great book, Shyamchi Aai — 'Shyam's mother' — told the story of his own childhood and the love of his mother, and it became one of the most beloved books of the Marathi language, read in every home. He wrote dozens of books for children and the people, full of love and idealism.
He died in 1950, at just fifty-one, worn out by his labours and his sorrow at the nation's divisions. He is honoured as the Gandhi of the children of Maharashtra — a teacher whose love for all beings made him one of the most beloved figures of the land.
