The Story
Born in 1906 in Lyallpur, Prithviraj Kapoor was drawn to acting against the wishes of his family and made his way to Bombay, where he entered the world of the silent and early talkie cinema. His powerful voice and his majestic presence made him one of the leading actors of the 1930s and 1940s.
He was equally great on the stage: he founded Prithvi Theatres in 1944, a travelling company that took classic Hindi plays to the towns of Bhārat, and the company's productions became the most famous in the land. His sons Raj, Shammi, and Shashi — and his grandsons — carried his name to the heights of the cinema.
His greatest film role was that of Emperor Akbar in Mughal-e-Azam, the epic that remains a classic of world cinema. He died in 1972, honoured as the patriarch of the greatest acting family of Bhārat and one of the titans of its stage and screen.
