The Story
Born in 1890 in Ariyakudi, Ramanuja Iyengar was trained in music from childhood and became a master of the Carnatic vocal art. He developed the structure of the concert — the format of opening varnam, kritis, and the concluding pieces — that became the standard of every Carnatic concert, and which is followed to this day.
His singing was the model of the tradition: his voice was sweet and clear, his diction perfect, and his rendering of the kritis — especially the compositions of Tyagaraja — was the standard of the age. He was honoured with the title of Sangeetha Kalanidhi and honoured across the South.
He died in 1967, honoured as the architect of the modern Carnatic concert. His format, his style, and his singing shaped the music of the South for a century, and his name remains one of the greatest in the Carnatic tradition.
