The Story
Born in 1917 in Kandy and raised in poverty, MGR entered the theatre and then the cinema, where his roles as the hero who fights for the poor made him the most beloved star of the South. From the 1950s he dominated the Tamil screen, his films — full of action, charity, and justice — making him the idol of millions.
He entered politics through the DMK and then founded his own party, the AIADMK, in 1972. In 1977 he became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and he governed for nearly a decade, loved by the people as few leaders have been — his welfare schemes and his simple life making him a legend.
He died in 1987, and his funeral was one of the largest in the history of the world. He is remembered as the matinee idol who became a Chief Minister — a star whose life, on screen and off, was devoted to the poor he had made his audience and his people.
