The Story
Born to Dasharatha and Sumitra, Lakshmana chose his fate at his mother's bidding: to serve Rama in all things. When Rama was exiled, Lakshmana walked beside him into the forest, and the legend grew that he slept not at all for those fourteen years, standing guard over his brother's family night after night.
He was the warrior of the trio: it was Lakshmana who cut off the nose of Shurpanakha, humiliating Ravana's sister and lighting the fuse of the war; he who built their forest hermitages; and he who faced the demon giant Kumbhakarna, slaying him at last with Indra's weapon.
In the final battle, it was Lakshmana who felled Indrajit, Ravana's invincible son, turning the tide of the war. When Rama later asked why he never slept, Lakshmana replied simply: your comfort is my rest, and your command is my sleep.
