The Story
Ambareesha ruled his kingdom with dharma and observed the Ekadashi fast with total dedication — a vow of one day of complete absorption in the divine. His devotion was so pure that the gods themselves considered him one of the greatest devotees alive.
One Ekadashi, the sage Durvasa — famed for his terrible temper — arrived after the fast had ended, and Ambareesha, honouring the sage's honour above his own, broke his fast with a drop of water in the sage's name to keep both sacred vows. The furious sage turned to curse the king.
But Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra rose to defend the king, and the sage — who had cursed gods themselves — found himself pursued across the universe, unable to touch the protected devotee. He finally returned, asked forgiveness, and Ambareesha, ever humble, prayed that the sage be spared. The king's devotion had outlasted the sage's power.
