Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar

The Story

Born in a poor Brahmin family, the boy Ishwar walked to Calcutta to study and rose through sheer brilliance — mastering Sanskrit and earning the title Vidyasagar, the ocean of learning. He became the head pandit of Fort William College and a principal of Sanskrit College, and he revolutionised Bengali education with his textbooks and his simplified alphabet.

His greatest fight was for the widows of Bengal — the thousands of child-widows condemned to shaved heads, white clothes, and lifelong misery. He petitioned the government, collected a lakh of signatures, and used every resource of his learning and reputation — and in 1856 the British government passed the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act. He then personally arranged the first widow remarriage in Calcutta.

He gave away his fortune to education — building schools, libraries, and institutions, including girls' schools that were among the first in Bhārat. He died in poverty in 1891, and his funeral was one of the largest Calcutta had ever seen — the people burying the man who had given them light.
