The Story
Garuda was born to Vinata and the sage Kashyapa, hatched from a colossal egg that split the sky. His mother had been enslaved by her sister Kadru, the mother of serpents, and the price of her freedom was the nectar of immortality — guarded by the gods and ringed by fire and blades.
Garuda stormed the heavens: he drank rivers, passed through the blades, extinguished the fire with his wings, and seized the nectar — but true to his promise, he let the god Indra reclaim it after his mother was freed. Vishnu, watching this display of strength and honesty, chose him as his eternal mount.
From that day Garuda is the sworn enemy of the serpent race, depicted with his wings spread beneath Vishnu, and his image adorns temple gateways across Bhārat. His story is told as the triumph of devotion — a bird who challenged heaven for his mother.
