The Story
Born in 1914, Eknath Ranade was drawn to the cause of the nation in his youth and became a devoted worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, serving its organisation and its ideal of national character for decades. His energy, his organisation, and his selflessness made him one of the most respected workers of the movement.
His great achievement was the building of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial at Kanyakumari — the monument at the southern tip of the land where Swami Vivekananda had meditated. Ranade raised the funds, organised the work, and drove the project to completion with a devotion that made it one of the great monuments of the nation.
He died in 1982, and his last years were given to the ideal of the nation's service. He is honoured as the builder of the Rock Memorial and as one of the great workers of the national awakening — a man who gave the nation a monument of its own spirit.
