The Story
In the cosmic wars of the Puranas, the devas and asuras fought for supremacy, and each side had its guru: the demons had Shukracharya, and the gods had Brihaspati. While the demons' guru was master of the power of resurrection, Brihaspati was the master of strategy and sacred knowledge — and under his counsel the gods time and again turned certain defeat into victory.
He is also the personification of Jupiter — Guru — the most beneficent of the nine planets of astrology of Bhārat, the giver of wisdom, wealth, and children. Thursday, Guruvar, is named for him, and is the day people of Bhārat traditionally begin new learning and worship of teachers.
In the Vedas he is the priest of the gods who utters the sacred hymns, and his name is invoked at the start of every ceremony. He is the eternal symbol that knowledge itself is the supreme power.
