The Story
Born in 1843, Basavappa Shastri was a scholar of astonishing learning — a master of Sanskrit and Kannada, a poet of genius, and a musician of a sweet voice. He served in the court of Mysore, where his talents won him honour, and he was drawn to the new art of the theatre that was spreading across Bhārat.
He translated the great Sanskrit plays into Kannada and wrote original dramas, founding the dramatic literature of the language. The account of his life in the Bharata Bharati series records that his Kaya Srigowri and his other plays were beloved by the people of Mysore, and his productions were the beginning of the modern Kannada stage.
He died in 1891, honoured as the father of Kannada theatre. His plays and his vision founded the stage of the language, and his name remains the greatest in the early history of Kannada drama.
