Born in 1913 in Rawalpindi, Balraj Sahni was an educated man — he studied at Lahore and London — who entered the cinema in the 1940s. He brought to the screen a naturalness and a truth that were new to Indian acting, and he rose to become one of its most beloved stars.
His greatest role came in 1953 in Do Bigha Zamin, the classic story of a poor farmer — a film whose realism and humanity made him a national icon and established the new wave of Indian cinema.
