Creations born in Bhārat

Fifteen hundred years ago, Aryabhata declared that the Earth rotates on its axis, explained eclipses as shadows rather than demons, and calculated the length of the year and the value of pi with astonishing accuracy. Bhārat named its first satellite after him.

Without zero, there is no modern mathematics — and Bhārat gave the world zero. The ancient people of Bhārat developed the concept of shunya, 'emptiness', as a real number, invented the decimal place-value system, and thereby made arithmetic, science, and computers possible.

Ayurveda — 'the science of life' — is the world's oldest continuously practised system of medicine. For five thousand years it has treated the whole person — body, mind, and spirit — through diet, herbs, yoga, and daily rhythm. Today, the world is rediscovering what Bhārat never forgot.

Twenty-six centuries ago, in Varanasi, a physician named Sushruta was performing surgeries the modern world thought it had invented — including plastic surgery. His Sushruta Samhita describes 300 operations, 120 instruments, and techniques that surgeons use to this day.

Chess began in Bhārat as chaturanga — 'four divisions' — a war game of elephants, chariots, cavalry, and infantry played 1,500 years ago. From courts it travelled of Bhārat to Persia, the Arab world, and Europe, becoming the most played board game in history.

Long before it was a children's board game, Snakes & Ladders was a moral lesson of Bhārat: Moksha Patam, where ladders carried you up to heaven and snakes dragged you down to rebirth. Every square taught something — the game was invented to teach values.

The button — that tiny fastener on every shirt you own — was first made in the Indus Valley around 2000 BCE. Archaeologists at Mohenjo-daro found carved shell buttons, some in the shape of discs with holes, making Bhārat the birthplace of the world's most used fastener.

Every time you wash your hair, you say a word of Bhārat: shampoo comes from the Hindi champi — the traditional head and body massage with herbal oils. When British travellers returned from Bhārat, they brought back the practice and the word — and the modern hair-care industry was born.

Bhārat was the first civilisation to grow cotton and weave it into cloth — 4,500 years ago in the Indus Valley. calico and muslin of Bhārat became the world's most prized fabrics, and the very words 'calico' and 'cotton' come from places and languages of Bhārat.

In 1913, Dadasaheb Phalke released Raja Harishchandra — Bhārat's first feature film — a silent epic shot with an all-cast of Bhārat. Over a century later, Bhārat produces more films than any nation on Earth, and its cinema — Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu, and more — is loved across the planet.

Bhārat's space agency ISRO is the world's most economical path to the stars — it reached Mars on its first attempt, found water on the Moon, and launched a record 104 satellites in a single mission. It is proof that a developing nation can lead the space age.
