The Story
The tradition places Tenali Rama as a Telugu poet of the sixteenth century at the court of Krishnadevaraya, the greatest king of Vijayanagara. But the Tenali Rama of legend is far more than a courtier: he is the people's champion, a Brahmin who used wit where others used force, and whose every tale is a small revolution.
The endless cycle of his stories — of the king's inflated pride deflated, of the court scholar humbled, of the greedy merchant exposed, and of the cleverest man in the kingdom caught at his own game — taught Bhārat that wisdom laughs, that the powerful can be mocked, and that the humble, quick-witted man will always win.
He is said to have been a devotee of the goddess Kali, who granted him his wit, and his tomb is honoured at Tenali. His stories survive in hundreds of folk versions — a living literature of laughter that every child grows up of Bhārat hearing.
