The Story
Born in Varanasi in 1891, Sampurnanand was a brilliant student of history and philosophy who was drawn to the national movement in his youth. He joined the Congress, took part in the non-cooperation and civil disobedience movements, and spent years in British prisons for the cause of freedom.
A scholar as well as a politician, he wrote extensively on Indian philosophy and culture, and his learning made him one of the most respected leaders of the Congress. After independence, he served as a minister in Uttar Pradesh and then, from 1954, as the state's Chief Minister for six years.
His government worked for education, land reform, and the uplift of the villages. He died in 1969, remembered as a leader of learning and integrity — the scholar who governed one of the great states of Bhārat with the mind of a teacher.
