The Story
Born in Bihar in 1906, Prabhavati Devi grew up in a family of the freedom movement and was married to Jayaprakash Narayan, the future hero of the struggle. She joined the Congress and took up the disciplines of Gandhian service, living a life of simplicity dedicated to the nation.
She took part in the salt satyagraha and the subsequent campaigns, and was arrested and imprisoned for her participation in the freedom movement. She worked for khadi and village industries, for the uplift of women, and for the removal of untouchability, serving in the constructive programmes that Gandhi placed at the centre of the struggle.
After independence, she continued her service to the people and stood beside her husband in his later movements for the reform of the nation. She died in 1973, remembered as one of the devoted women workers of the freedom movement — the companion of one of its greatest leaders.
