The Story
The lore of the Veerashaiva tradition tells of Molige Marayya, a potter and a devotee of the Lord, whose faith was so complete that no test could shake it. He lived in the age of the sharanas, the great movement of Basava, and his devotion became one of the tradition's most treasured stories.
In the famous test, the Lord came to him in disguise and demanded of the devotee even his head — and Marayya, without a moment's hesitation, prepared to give it, proving that his surrender was absolute. The Lord revealed himself and blessed him, and the devotee's name passed into the sacred lore as the very symbol of total offering.
His story is told in the vachanas and the lore of the tradition as an example of the perfect devotee — one who held nothing back, not even life itself, in the service of the Lord. He is counted among the great sharanas whose faith built the movement.
