The Story
Born in 1891 in Masti, Venkatesha Iyengar was educated in Mysore and entered the government service, rising to become a district commissioner. But his real life was in letters: he began to write in the early years of the century and became the first master of the Kannada short story.
His stories — hundreds of them — capture the life of the Karnataka countryside and town with a truth and a sympathy that have never been surpassed. His novel Chikaveera Rajendra, his essays, and his poetry completed a body of work of remarkable range, all written in a style of quiet perfection.
He was honoured with the Jnanpith Award in 1968, the first Kannada writer to receive it, and with the Padma Bhushan. He died in 1975, leaving the short story of Kannada at a height no writer has since equalled — the master of the form.
