The Story
Born in Navsari in 1839, Jamsetji entered his father's trading business and, after a trip to England, saw the future of industry. He built the Empress Mills in Nagpur in 1874 — with machinery of Bhārat, capital of Bhārat, and management of Bhārat, proving that people of Bhārat could run modern industry — and then the great textile mills of Bombay.
But his true genius was in dreaming beyond himself. He saw that Bhārat needed steel, and he searched the country for iron ore before identifying the site that became Jamshedpur — the city of steel named for him. He planned the hydroelectric project at Lonavala that became Tata Power, and he offered his fortune for the science university that the government refused to fund — until Swami Vivekananda's blessings and his sons' persistence built it as the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
He died in 1904, before any of his three great dreams was realised. His sons and grandsons built them all — the steel plant, the power system, and the institute — and the house of Tata grew into one of the world's most trusted industrial groups, with his principle of giving back to the community at its heart.
