“The city of victory shall rise where the dharma of the land is reborn.”

— The spirit of Vijayanagara

The Story

In the early fourteenth century, the south of Bhārat had been ravaged by the armies of the Delhi Sultanate, and the old kingdoms had fallen. The brothers Harihara and Bukka, warriors of the Hoysala country, rose to rebuild — and tradition says they were guided by the sage Vidyaranya of Sringeri, who blessed the founding of a new kingdom that would restore Hindu rule.

In 1336 they founded Vijayanagara — the city of victory — on the banks of the Tungabhadra, in the boulder-strewn land of Hampi. From this capital their empire grew across the Deccan, defeating the sultanates and sheltering the temples, the Sanskrit learning, and the arts of the south.

Harihara ruled first, and Bukka succeeded him — and under their line, the empire became the wonder of travellers from Persia, Portugal, and China, who described a city of diamonds, temples, and bazaars richer than any in Europe. The brothers built the foundation of the greatest Hindu state of the age, and their empire survived for over three hundred years.
