The Story
Born in Sialkot in 1898, Nanda was a brilliant student of economics who joined the national movement in his youth. He worked with Gandhi and served in the labour movement, organising the workers and fighting for their rights — work that made him one of the leading labour leaders of the nation.
He served as a minister in the government of Bombay before independence and as the Labour Minister of independent Bhārat, where he championed the cause of the working people. He was a scholar of economics whose books and ideas influenced the planning of the nation.
In 1964, on the death of Nehru, he served as acting Prime Minister until Shastri's election, and again in 1966 after Shastri's death until Indira Gandhi took office. He died in 1998, at the age of a hundred years, honoured with the Bharat Ratna — a life of a century devoted to the nation.
