The Story
Born in 1883 in Manjeshwar, Govinda Pai was educated in Mangaluru and served as a teacher and in public life. He was a poet of the first rank — his Kannada poems, whether on nature, love, or the soul, are among the finest of the language — but he was also a scholar of unusual depth.
His historical research was pioneering: working in the Tulu and Kannada lands of the coast, he used inscriptions, language, and folklore to reconstruct the ancient past of the region. His study of the life and age of the great saint Basaveshwara is a landmark of scholarship, and his work on the ancient history of the coast changed the understanding of the region's past.
He died in 1963, honoured as one of the great men of letters of Karnataka. His poetry and his scholarship together made him a unique figure — the poet-scholar whose work enriched both the imagination and the knowledge of his people.
