The Story
Gendalal Dixit was among the generation of young people of Bhārat shaped by Gandhi's return to Bhārat in 1915. He became a full-time worker for the Congress in the Malwa region, organising the movements of Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience, and Quit Bhārat in the villages of Madhya Pradesh, and was imprisoned for his part in each.
His work was constructive as well as political: he promoted khadi and village industries, worked for the uplift of the backward classes, and campaigned for Hindu-Muslim unity in a region where communal tensions ran deep. He was known for his simplicity and his devotion to Gandhi's principles of truth and non-violence.
He lived to see independence in 1947, having served the movement for three decades. He died in the year of freedom itself, 1947 — remembered as one of the selfless satyagrahis who gave their lives quietly, without name or fame, to the nation.
