The Story
Born into poverty in Coimbatore, Naidu left school early and made his way by repairing bicycles and machines — teaching himself engineering on the job. His genius caught the attention of the Tata company, which made him its technical adviser, and he travelled the world studying industries — in Germany, the US, and Japan — then came home to build them in Bhārat.
He built Bhārat's first indigenous car, the 'G.D.', in the 1930s; he manufactured electric motors, pumps, and machine tools; and his companies made textile machinery, radios, and film equipment. He was a pioneer of manufacturing of Bhārat at a time when Bhārat imported nearly everything, and his motto was simple: make it yourself.
He died in 1974, and Coimbatore — which he helped make the Manchester of South Bhārat — remembers him as its greatest son. His life is the story of the self-made industrialist of Bhārat: no degrees, no patrons, just hands and a head that refused to be defeated.
