Gangadharrao Deshpande

The Story

Born in Bidar in 1871, Gangadharrao Deshpande was educated in Belgaum and drawn early to public life by the national movement. He founded the famous Karnatak Vidyavardhaka Sangha to promote Kannada learning and, as a journalist and editor of several newspapers, became the voice of the freedom struggle in Karnataka.

He was a leading figure of the Indian National Congress, presiding over provincial conferences and carrying the movements — Swadeshi, Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience — to the Kannada districts. The British imprisoned him repeatedly, and his fearless speeches earned him the title Karnataka Kesari, the Lion of Karnataka, given by Lokamanya Tilak himself.

He worked for education, for the unification of the Kannada-speaking regions, and for village uplift all his life. He died in 1960, having seen his long struggle bear fruit in independence — and his name remains one of the most honoured in Karnataka's freedom history.
