The Story
Born in 1878 in Amritsar, Ghulam Muhammad — Gama — was a prodigy of the akhara, the traditional wrestling pit of the Punjab. Trained in the ancient discipline of the Indian wrestler — with its oils, its exercises, and its thousand push-ups a day — he developed a strength and a technique that made him unbeatable.
In 1910 he travelled to London, where he defeated the great European champions, including the wrestler Stanislaus Zbyszko, in an astonishing display of skill and strength. He was proclaimed the World Champion, and his name became known across the world as the greatest wrestler of the age.
He returned to Bhārat a national hero and remained undefeated for the rest of his life — a record that no wrestler in history has matched. He died in 1960, honoured as the king of the akhara, and his name remains the greatest in the wrestling tradition of Bhārat.
