“Where my body falls, there the earth shall be sacred.”

— The legend of Dakshayani

The Story

Daksha, the lord of rituals, had a daughter whose beauty and devotion won her the choice of a husband. Against all the court's expectations, she chose Shiva — the ash-smeared ascetic of Kailasa — and married him, living simply with him in the mountains while the world wondered at her choice.

When Daksha held a great sacrifice and insulted his son-in-law by excluding him, Dakshayani went to the ceremony to plead for her husband's honour. There, before the assembly, her father heaped abuse on Shiva — and Dakshayani, unable to bear the insult to her lord, immolated herself in the sacrificial fire.

Shiva's grief and rage shook the universe. He carried her body across the earth in his cosmic dance of destruction, until Vishnu scattered her remains — and the fifty-one places where her body parts fell became the Shakti Peethas, among the holiest shrines of Bhārat. The goddess was reborn as Parvati to unite with Shiva again.

Why it matters today

Dakshayani's story birthed the Shakti Peethas — pilgrimage sites from Kashmir to Kanyakumari where the mother goddess is worshipped in her fiercest and most loving forms. She is the beginning of the goddess's long story in Bhārat.
