The Story
Born in 1892, he was a child of remarkable brilliance who renounced the world in his teens and was enthroned as the head of the Sringeri monastery, founded by Adi Shankara himself, at the age of twenty. For over four decades he upheld the teaching of Advaita Vedanta with scholarship and serenity.
His life was one of total simplicity and tireless service: he walked across Bhārat on pilgrimage, blessed and taught thousands, and his public discourses on the Upanishads and the Gita drew crowds who came simply to be in his presence. He was known for his piercing intelligence, his gentle humour, and his insistence on orthodox purity in every detail of ritual and conduct.
In 1954, the President of Bhārat conferred on him the Bharat Ratna — the highest civilian honour — one of the few spiritual leaders ever so honoured. He guided the peetham until 1954, and his successors continue his work, keeping Sringeri the living seat of the Advaita tradition.
