“What is a vow, if I do not fulfil it with my own hands?”
— Bhima's pledge to Draupadi
The Story
Born of the Wind God, Bhima grew into a giant among men. His childhood was spent defending his brothers: he slew the demon Baka who terrorised a village, killed the wicked Hidimba in the forest, and married his noble sister Hidimbi — beginning the mountain war-band that would later serve the Pandavas.
When the Pandavas were cheated of their kingdom, it was Bhima who swore the terrible oath — to break the thigh of Duryodhana and drink the blood of his tormentor Dushasana. He lived with that oath through thirteen years of exile and turned it into the engine of his vengeance in the war.
On the battlefield he was unstoppable: he slew the giant Kichaka, the serpentine Shalya, and finally kept his vow by breaking Duryodhana's thigh in the duel at the lake — ending the Kaurava line as he had sworn.
