Tantra

The Story

The word tantra means 'loom' or 'system' — a practical framework of practice. Between the 5th and 11th centuries CE, an extraordinary spiritual current rose in Kashmir, Bengal, and Kerala that rejected the idea of renouncing the world. Instead, it taught that the divine is not beyond creation — it is creation.

In the philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism, associated with the great sage Abhinavagupta, the ultimate reality is Shiva — pure consciousness — which freely manifests the entire universe as its own play (leela). The world is therefore not illusion but the dance of the divine. Matter, body, senses — all are sacred.

This is why tantra uses 'forbidden' things as instruments: because nothing is truly forbidden when everything is divine. The tantric practitioner aims to transform energy — including sexuality, emotion, and desire — into awakened consciousness, through mantra (sacred sound), yantra (sacred geometry), ritual, and meditation.

Tantra radically honoured the feminine. The Goddess (Devi) is not an auxiliary but the supreme power of the cosmos; Shakti is the dynamic energy of consciousness itself. Temples, rituals, and art across Bhārat — from Kali worship in Bengal to the kundalini yoga of the yogic tradition — carry this vision.

Tantra's practical genius survives in the kundalini and chakra systems of yoga, in the mantras chanted daily across Bhārat, and in the stunning temple architecture built as three-dimensional yantras. Behind the sensational stories, its core teaching remains: awaken the divine energy within you, and you will see the cosmos shining in every particle.
